The Graveyard Shift #23

...a pretty spooky experience considering the ghostly activity in the house. This went on for weeks until a lot of the larger items had been sold.   The spooky graveyard   To alleviate the stress of all these problems we continued to frequent the local pub, the Meynell Arms. There was always a good atmosphere here, unlike at home, and the landlord at that time was quite a character. His idea of fun was to tell everyone there was free beer that night and when we all clamoured to the bar he would throw all the slops over us! Eventually people got the idea not to wear their good clothes when going for a night out in the Meynell! Another one of his tricks wa...

...look very spooky and gloomy though. The basement corridor and rooms particularly so. However, we would love to explore and found a walk-in safe off one of the rooms – I think this is where they kept the family silver. All the rooms seemed to have a smaller room off them and it was a great place to play hide and seek! Halfway up the spiral staircases were store rooms (to one side) with slatted shelves for keeping the linen and towels to hand for the servants. I used to stand in these large cupboards and feel myself transported back to another era, as nothing had really changed in 100 years – but not for long as they were quite dark! All the rooms were still t...

The Haunting of Hoar Cross Hall #32

...The typewriter keys clattered away as Viv wrote her story. It was coming along nicely and she was feeling pleased with herself. The attic room that she and her brothers had made into their ‘den’ was ideal for getting away from everybody and having some peace and quiet and she quite forgot about the time as she lost herself in the plot. Suddenly she looked up and realized how dark it was getting; the December nights were pulling in and it was already quite dusky by 3.30pm. Quickly she packed her books and folders away and prepared to go downstairs. How she hated being up in the attics when it was getting dark as it was so spooky! The wind was starting to howl...

...  The spooky attic corridor   My parents also heard noises when they were in their bedroom too.  It sounded like a room full of people talking, like at a party.  They thought it might be birds nesting under the eaves so they slept in another room further along the corridor to see if they still heard it – and sure enough, they did!  What was going on?  Had we disturbed some lost souls forever wandering in the attics? Well, that’s not all because one night my mum was woken up by the sight of a little girl ‘floating’ over the bed.    She said the girl was wearing a long nightdress and mop cap and seemed to be stretching her arms out to my m...

...it was so spooky!  The wind was starting to howl outside and the familiar sound of a banging window started.  Viv sighed and stood in the doorway of the room – should she go and investigate or leave it?  Against her better judgement she walked up the corridor towards the noise and checked all the rooms but as usual all the windows were shut tight.  The banging continued along with the familiar prickle down her spine.  She needed to get out of here and quick!  As she turned to go back along the corridor towards the other end she could hear people talking but not clearly, just a general babble of voices.  Viv was in a complete panic now as she knew there...
