Elizabethan and Gothic were endorsed as being of old English style, Elizabethan for English gentlemen and Gothic for Christian English gentlemen, with a religious tone on the increase up to 1870, by which time the Victorian religious revival had started to wane. Wealth in itself didn't guarantee entry into the landed gentry and certainly not into the aristocracy.

...s that he should be disciplining his children a lot better than he was. My dad hit the roof about this as he didn’t like people telling him what to do and he was by no means a religious man and couldn’t understand what all the fuss was about. We still got a telling off from our mum though.

The church was also where the remains of our ghost was buried – the small child whose cries we often heard. She was buried in the churchyard and we had found her grave after hearing the noises and stories about her. I think she was about 9 years old and the grave belonged to a Rose Meynell.

...st” and should be “covered with gravel, sand or turf”. Another style of walk was a 'covert walk' in which the trees met in an arch over the path. These were known as 'pleached alleys' and Bacon explains thus:
“But because the alley will be long, and in the great heat of the day, you ought to plant a covert alley about twelve foot in height by which you may go in shade into the garden”.
