...to hang a parachute from the ceiling (an actual relic from World War Two) and drape it out and around the edge of the room – with coloured lights behind it was quite effective and very cool – but cigarettes were out of bounds due to the flammable silk material. That was our 1970s health and safety rules!
We had managed to get the grounds into some sort of shape with the help of a sit-on mower and a hedge trimmer. We found topiary frames deeply embedded in the overgrown hedges – they must have looked amazing in their day – birds, letter Ms (for Meynell), balls – and even a man on horseback! There was also a group of small square gardens, each named aft...
