William Morris was an artist, writer and decorator concerned with raising standards of Victorian design and through the Arts and Crafts movement he promoted the creative dignity of craftsmen as opposed to manufactured goods. Thus it was believed that an architect should design not only the church, but its fittings, pews, lights, hangings, organ case etc so that the church was one harmonious whole. John Betjeman himself wrote about the church saying, “This is why Holy Angels, Hoar Cross, is so much all of a piece.......the proportions are unexampled.........
