...I started college in Burton-on-Trent – another big change for me.  It was nice to be in an environment where I was treated a bit more like an adult and I could wear my own clothes and not a uniform!  I wore my new afghan coat which was admired by all and sundry along with jeans and cheesecloth tops completing the hippy look that half the college wore.  This didn’t go down well with my mum who had just spent a fortune on smart new clothes for me – oh well, I did wear them sometimes!  Of course, travelling to Burton each day meant that someone now had to take and fetch me as there was no school bus anymore and no other public transport.  Dad would ask t...

...RAGS TO RICHES:  My parents were married in Derby in July 1952.  Mum was 19 and dad was 36 so quite a bit older.  They both lived in Derby and were very arty; my dad went to the Derby Sketching Club in his free time and my mum attended art college.  I’m not sure where they met but it was either at something art related or at a dance, as was usual in those days.  My dad was a sculptor by trade; I think his interest was sparked by seeing all the beautiful alabaster in Italian churches during the war.  After the war he set up his own business making alabaster lamps, bowls and candlesticks among other things (see header picture).  He would go to the alabast...
