Ironically the house became a Hotel and Spa in 1990 with a swimming pool in exactly the same location as where the monks were going to put theirs!
And so onto 1970 when my family bought the Hall. Apparently my dad had seen a notice about the contents sale of Dr Gillies in 1963, and had shown an interest in the Hall back then. I imagine my mother said ‘No’ as she had two small children at that time! In 1965, a group of monks known as the monastic Community of the Glorious Ascension, met at Hoar Cross Hall to discuss buying the house and turning it into a Christian Community. Incredibly they were allowed full access to the house while they were fund raising – the total required to purchase, equip and furnish the property was estimated at around £350,000. The plan was that they would accommodate 100 guests plus staff, and be equipped with a gymnasium, swimming pool and facilities for drama, music, films, crafts, conferences and other activities. ...With the new Downton Abbey film out this month I thought I would do a comparison of the two family homes, Downton and Hoar Cross Hall, the latter being my old family home for those of you who are new to these blogs. Although Downton Abbey is fictional, the house on which it is based is not, it being Highclere Castle in Hampshire which was built in 1679 and is owned by the Earl of Carnarvon. Hoar Cross Hall was the original home of the Meynell Ingram family who first came from Leicestershire and was built in 1863.
