When the Second World War started in 1939 the next generation of Meynells stepped up to help out. Francis had married Lady Dorothy and their eldest son Hugo also served as an Officer and was aWarded the Military Cross, although he was seriously injured at Al Alamein leading to his early death in 1960. Their daughter, also Dorothy, moved back to Hoar Cross at the outbreak of War and joined the Joint War Organisation of the Red Cross and St John, which meant travelling overseas to Africa, Sicily and Italy.

The Clerk of Works at Hoar Cross, namely one F W Lycett, had kept a meticulous Meteorological Register in the early years of the century. He kept them in two large leather-bound volumes, the last entry being in February 1941.
