...Church in Oxford. A new dean, Henry Liddell, began working there around about that time and brought with him his wife and young family. One of his daughters was called Alice and this little girl was widely thought to be the inspiration behind his stories but Carroll always denied this.
In 1852 he became a tutor for the children of Charles Wood of Hickleton Hall in Yorkshire. During the summer a friend of the children, Mary Heath, stayed at the hall and this is the little girl believed to be his inspiration for Alice. But also, the room in which he taught the children had a lovely mirror over the mantlepiece which is exactly the same as the picture of the mirror...

Wimbledon itself is the oldest tennis tournament in the world and arguably the most famous. Since the first tournament 125 years ago in 1877, The Championships have been hosted by the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in Wimbledon, London and take place over two weeks in late June – early July. ...Church in Oxford in 1852. He would later become the famous author Lewis Carroll who wrote 'Alice in Wonderland' among other stories. The mirror over the fireplace inspired his story about 'Alice through the looking glass'. When Emily got married in 1863 she took this mirror with her to her new home, Hoar Cross Hall, and for many decades it hung over the fireplace in the Library until the Meynells left in the 1950s. However, the present owner tracked the mirror down and it is now back in the Library on the mantlepiece again where Emily herself used to look at it! ...Francis Bacon was born in 1561 and was 1st Viscount St Alban. He wrote his Essay on Gardens in 1625, a year before his death of pneumonia. He was also Lord Chancellor of England under King James I and led the advancement of both natural philosophy and scientific method and his works remained influential even in the late stages of the Scientific Revolution. The essays he wrote between, mainly, 1612 and 1625 were about anything from love and marriage to superstitions to gardens and any subject in between! Bacon's genius as a phrase-maker appears to great advantage in the later essays and the 'Oxford Dictionary of Quotations' includes no fewer than 91 quotations...
