...ecame the King George VI and grandfather to our own King Charles. Even more fascinating are photos of the former Empress of Russia with her four grand-daughters on board the Emperor's yacht 'Standart' – the little girls looKing so pretty in their matching dresses and hats. The Empress was actually Alexandra's sister, Dagmar and there are lots of photos of them together as a family travelling around Denmark and Norway.
Towards the end of the album is a picture of 'the Nimrod' setting sail for the south pole in 1907 with Captain Earnest Shackleton at the helm, after being inspected by King Edward and Queen Alexandra. Such historic photographs are priceless but...

They may have VIsited during one of their tours of the Midlands and it may have only been for afternoon tea as we're not sure due to insufficient records, but we do know that the Meynell family proVIded hospitality for the Princess Royal, probably in the 1920s and for whom a special bathroom containing a marble-enclosed bath was installed on the first floor of the house. I remember an extra bathroom in the east wing of the house at the end of the corridor, which did seem a strange place to put a bathroom - I now know that this was Princess Mary's bathroom! (see header picture of Queen Mary and her daughter).

...Here is a final selection of photos from the album of Queen Alexandra, found in the Library of Hoar Cross Hall. Alexandra enjoyed photography as a hobby and in 1908 put together this album of personal photos of her family to be sold for charity. It is a fascinating insight into another world, long gone now. As we lead up to the Coronation of King Charles III it is a reminder of all that has gone before and all that is to come in the future with our hard worKing royals.

...More photos from the album of Queen Alexandra in the run up to the Coronation showing members of the royal family at leisure in the early part of the 20th century. Alexandra enjoyed photography as a hobby and in 1908 put together an album of her personal photos to be sold for charity. In it are photos of her husband King Edward VII and other royals spending time at Balmoral and Sandringham during their holidays – a rare insight into how the royal family spent their leisure time, which in those days would never have been seen before.
