And what a night one particular banquet turned out to be. Halfway through the night a man took ill and came and sat in the Long Gallery. The next thing his friends came up to my mum and told her he’d had a heart attack and died. Surely not, my mum was thinking, not in the middle of a banquet? However, he had indeed died! But at the request of his friends, he was moved to a store room off the Entrance Hall until the ambulance arrived; they said that he loved a good party and he wouldn’t want to spoil their night out! It was like something out of a black comedy or Faulty Towers, carrying a body down the gallery, hoping no-one...

He told me how his grandparents brought him up but how poor they were and because of this they had to go to the market at the end of the day to get food and vegetables at give-a-way prices. This was 1920s Britain and many families lived like this. I always think how strange it was that he ended up in a stately home and his life was started in another stately home – almost as though it was meant to be!

During his years in the Second World War he sent all his wages back to his mother who saved them for him until he got home – this meant that he had enough money to set up his own business. First though he spent two years in a sanatorium recovering from tuberculosis (TB), after losing half a lung. His long illness also caused him to sadly break off his engagement to his fiancee as he didn’t think he would be able to support her. Eventually he got back on his feet, bought the alabaster works and started making alabaster products; he was known locally as ‘Alabaster Bill’.
