...schooner Ariadne, which was acquired by Emily in 1886. It was one of the largest schooners afloat - its scale can be appreciated by the number of crew on board: 20 hands on deck and six under deck. That's nearly as many staff as she had at home! Emily was also devoutly high church and even took the vicar of Hoar Cross on regular cruises with her, having had a small chapel installed aboard.
These two pictures were taken in Africa, possibly from her Nile trip, although there are other photos showing members of the family in foreign climes. Emily cruised the Mediterranean, the North Sea, the Baltic and around the British Isles between 1886 and 1897...

...ARISTOCRATIC TRAVELS PART 2: During the latter part of the 1800s Emily Charlotte Meynell travelled around the Mediterranean on board her schooner, Ariadne, recording her travels in her many diaries and drawing books, as mentioned in my previous blog. I have now found the photo of her yacht and one of her paintings; she was a skilled water colour artist as you can see but had a particular affection for nautical subjects. ...t called 'Ariadne' which was a fully-crewed schooner of 380 tons with over 20 staff on it. She also had a small chapel made on the yacht and would often take her local vicar on trips with her so they could hold services for her and the crew. Every spring she would go on a cruise around the Mediterranean and sometimes across to the Netherlands and Germany. She loved painting and would spend much of her time doing water colours along with collecting beautiful objects to decorate the Hall and the Church of the Holy Angels.
