Behind the Green Baize Door #41

Off the staircase to one side was a large walk-in cupboard which held all the linen and towels and I often used to hide in this cupboard when playing hide-and-seek with my brothers!
However, upheavals of war, social changes and financial challenges in the early part of the 20th century signalled that the heyday of the 'Upstairs, downstairs' culture was all but over. Many of these large houses are now open to the public, as was ours, and it's interesting to see the doors and what's behind them.

One night my mum was woken up by the sight of a little girl ‘floating’ over the bed. She said the girl was wearing a long nightdress and mop cap and seemed to be stretching her arms out to my mum as if she was asking for help. She floated all around the bed scaring my mum half to death. Frantically she tried to wake my dad while the ghoulish girl reached out - by the time he was awake the child was fading away and he missed it all!
On another occasion the ghost appeared outside our lounge door, which was on the first floor, one night. My mum heard a tapping noise on the door and when she opened it, there stood the little girl. She thoug...Behind the green baize door #47
