...is a late 19th century house built in the style of the late 17th century.
The estate includes the villages of Bugthorpe and Kirby Underdale and is designated as a Heritage Area with nationally important landscape value, including 1,380 acres of woodland. Traditionally it had numerous small dairy farms but since the 1980s land drainage schemes allowed it to be used to grow cereals and this has led to the disappearance of dairy farms on the Garrowby Estate. Agriculture is at the heart of all the estates owned by the Halifax family – Garrowby Farm currently has a high health herd of around 65 pedigree Limousin cows supported by a 140 cow commercial herd. ...of early 19th century “display” armour, never intended for wear, but merely to look decorative. During the mediaeval banquets which we held there, the guests would remove the armour and try it on so we ended up having to remove it permanently when the banquets were running during the winter months!
This room also displayed my mother’s collection of Victorian costumes and dresses to which she was always adding new items. These included uniforms from the East India Company and the Staffordshire Yeomanry through to wedding gowns, afternoon dresses and Ball gowns.

...HOAR CROSS HALL - A BIT OF HISTORY : Hoar Cross was part of Needwood Forest, the 11th century lands of Henry de Ferrers. The land was passed down to Henry’s son and subsequent various people over the course of 500 years ending with the Webb family, around the 1730s, who bought the land and house known as the Manor of the Cross. This was quite a large house built on a hill near Yoxall (which is the village next to Hoar Cross). In 1740 the manor house was demolished and later the Hon. Charles Talbot bought the estate for £17,000. Eventually it was sold to Hugo Meynell, who already owned huge amounts of property all over the county.

...From earliest times the king's court has traveled around the kingdom so the king could see first hand what was going on in his realm. When the king showed up, the local subjects were expected to provide food, entertainment, and accommodations usually in the form of mediaeval banquets. For the King or Queen's subjects this could be very expensive and not all royalty was welcome! However, this was the only way that people could see their King or Queen and know that they were real. Fast forward from the twelve century to the 21st century and royals are still touring the country so their subjects can 'see them and believe in them'.
