...nd. The silver armour, which was hanging on the Ballroom walls, was knocked off and people were trying it on for fun. Halfway through the evening I had my big acting moment when I ran from one end of the room to the other with a bear chasing after me while I screamed the house down (don’t worry, it was a man in costume!). Eventually people calmed down a bit when the coffee was served and watched Dave the fire-eater do his performance. By midnight it was all over and the guests moved to the bar to await their lifts.

...VENTURES NEW: We were now in our third year at the Hall and our lives were always busy keeping on top of the weeds and general upkeep of the house. My dad expected us children to help as much as possible, which we hated, and much of our time was spent trying to hide from him to get out of doing the chores. ...RAGS TO RICHES: My family originated from Derby and my parents were married there in July 1952. Mum was 19 and dad was 36 so quite a bit older. They both lived in Derby and were very arty; my dad went to the Derby Sketching Club in his free time and my mum attended art college. I’m not sure where they met but it was either at something art related or at a dance, as was usual in those days. My dad was a sculptor by trade; I think his interest was sparked by seeing all the beautiful alabaster in Italian churches during the war. After the war he set up his own business making alabaster lamps, bowls and candlesticks among other things (see header picture)....Rags to Riches #15
