...ed into a hunting lodge. The house was three stories high and incorporated one of the castle’s towers, which remains part of the present-day building. The Talbots split the house into two properties and used their half as a summer residence. By 1801, the 15th Earl of Shrewsbury decided that the hunting lodge was beyond repair and commissioned a gothic-style country house to be built on his estate. This doubled the size of the property and took 10 years to build! (A bit like Hoar Cross Hall – but I suppose they are big places!). I think the First World War had a lot to do with staff cutbacks as society was changing between the wars and Lady Dorothy’s two daughters weren’t really interested in high living and parties – they wanted to do something useful with their lives. They had spent much of their childhood in the schoolroom at the Hall. The sons of the family were away at boarding school but the girls had a governess and nursery maid to look after them.
