GHOSTBUSTERS! People were always coming to Hoar Cross Hall to either hire the place or to have a look around. In 1973, because of all the media interest in our ghosts, we had a couple of professional ghost hunters asking to stay over one night to try and find the source of the noises. They brought cases full of recording equipment and set it all up in one of the attic rooms. Rather them than me I thought! Then I had a brilliant idea and went off to tell my brother Gavin all about it. As mentioned in my first blog the attic and basement had a row of bells which the family used to summon the servants. RACING TRAVELS: During the 1960s my dad travelled all over Europe with his racing team. The header photo shows him with his VW van with his racing car on the back. He usually took two mechanics with him who were friends of his who just loved racing and volunteered their services for a free holiday abroad! He went to all the big racing circuits: Hockenheim, Nurburgring and Monza, travelling across Europe to get to them. He always came back with lots of funny stories to tell. Because the van he used wasn't brand new it would sometimes break down but at least he had two mechanics with him - however, getting parts wasn't easy in the 1960s, especially...

PANTO PRANKS! During the 1970s Hoar Cross Hall was used from time to time for local community activities and one such event was the production in 1978 of a traditional pantomime, ‘Midnight and a Journey back to Happiness’. It was written by local people, Robert Leighton from Yoxall and the Hon. Alexandra Meynell, daughter-in-law of Mrs Jean Meynell whom we had purchased the Hall from. The words and music were written by local songwriter, David Matthews, who had written songs for quite a few pop artists during the 1960s, his most famous being Matt Munro’s ‘We’re gonna change the world’. So off to a good start there!

ARISTOCRATIC TRAVELS PART 2: During the latter part of the 1800s Emily Charlotte Meynell travelled around the Mediterranean on board her schooner, Ariadne, recording her travels in her many diaries and drawing books, as mentioned in my previous blog. I have now found the photo of her yacht and one of her paintings; she was a skilled water colour artist as you can see but had a particular affection for nautical subjects. One particular holiday around Nice in the South of France with her brother Charles is documented by the water-colour paintings they both made.
