There was a large wooden board from the window sill to the stone balustrade and he would sit by the window and wait for squirrels and birds to cross the board and eat titbits from his hand – what a charming picture this conjures up albeit in tragic circumstances. This room became our lounge and the dressing room next door became our new kitchen with a serving hatch knocked through for mealtimes – well, it was the seventies!

Not everyone was so fortunate though, which is why we remember them this weekend on Remembrance Day - lest we forget.

However, I think this made him more determined to prove himself and he did make a success of his life, first running an alabaster business and employing men who had been disabled in the war, then motor racing and buying Hoar Cross Hall to display his large collection of arms and armour. Not everyone was so fortunate though, which is why we remember them on these special occasions such as V E Day - lest we forget.
