...Alps in a Volkswagon van with the car on a trailer behind – what an amazing experience for a 10 year old!  The car then went on display in the Hall once they returned. Dad & my young brother Piers with the BRM in 1973 Every year we would go to the Grand Prix which was usually held at Silverstone.  My dad had kept his old VW van as it was useful for transporting furniture etc from auction houses and we would pack this up and go off for the weekend.  Gavin and I would sit on chairs in the back of the van and every time we went round a corner our chairs would tip over to the side and we’d be hanging on for dear life – my mum would sit in the fron...

...LIKE FATHER, LIKE SONS  As mentioned before my dad used to be a racing driver during the 1950s and ran his own team in the 1960s, travelling all over  Europe in his trusty Volkswagon van with his two mechanics and driver.   He didn’t have big sponsorship money behind him and most of it was done on a shoestring but he came back with lots of funny stories of their van breaking down or some rural ‘hotel’ that they had stayed in.  From each country that he visited he always brought me back a doll dressed in the traditional costume of that country.  There was quite a collection and I still have them; I used to put them on display in the Library when our...
