...th him to Leeds.  Next thing I know we’re being taken in a chauffeur driven car to a small airfield near the track where he kept a light aircraft!  I had no idea he had a plane but climbed aboard and enjoyed a trip to Leeds by air, marvelling at how small everything looked on the ground!  Of course I had nothing with me as my suitcase had gone home with my dad and I had to wear my tee shirt and jeans to go out later for a meal in a fancy restaurant.  Next day Chris drove me home in his Lotus at high speeds down the motorway – I don’t think I even wore a seatbelt as I was only used to my dad’s 40mph van!  Still, it was all very exciting for a 15 year...

After their marriage they had lived at Old Hall while a temporary home was being built for them at Cross Hayes, between Yoxall and Hoar Cross and they lived there until their new home was ready. Hoar Cross Hall was south facing in extensive grounds covering many acres. The property was entered through an archway which had a Lodge to one side and a Gatehouse to the other side. The grand total 'less 10% discount' came to £13.13 shillings (£13.65). Delivery was made to Burton-on-Trent by Midland Railway and no doubt the chauffeur from the Hall would have collected it in the car in time for the supper. No nipping out to Sainsbury's in those days! Emily Meynell's sister-in-law, Lady Mary wanted to organize an eighteenth birthday and 'coming out' Ball in 1912 for her daughter, Daisy.
