Although this house isn’t quite so neighbourly to Hoar Cross Hall as the others in this series, it is loosely linked to the hall as it was the inspiration for the Mediaeval Banquets that my parents ran in the 1970s. They went along one night, to one of their banquets, to see what the format was and saw immediately how popular they were and so decided to start their own brand of banquets. The Coombe Abbey banquets were very traditional and had minstrels playing lutes etc while people ate their meal. The entertainment too was typical of mediaeval amusement of the times and I remember my parents saying it was an enjoyable night out but not terribly lively!...

...in Lennox Gardens, London, the home of his mother, Lady Mary. She had offered her house to the War Office and the Red Cross, and it had become a Military Hospital for officers.When the Second World War started in 1939 the next generation of Meynells stepped up to help out. Francis had married Lady Dorothy and their eldest son Hugo also served as an officer and was awardedthe Military Cross, although he was seriously injured at Al Alamein leading to his early death in 1960. Their daughter, also Dorothy, moved back to Hoar Cross at the outbreak of war and joined the Joint War Organisation of the Red Cross and St John, which meant travelling overseas to Africa...Celebrating VE Day #94
